If I happen to know who the quilt is going to early enough, it can effect the colors and pattern of the quilt. Those who have recently served would receive a more 'red, white and blue' pattern. If the recipient has been out of the service for awhile, the quilt would still have red, white and blue in it, but the pattern would be more diverse, more a reflection of life, encompassing more than just one period of their lives.
Those with text of a different color are links to how-to information.
Note: Going from memory, I may have some of the quilt names wrong. The correct names are on the quilts, so the owners know what they are. Quilt of Valor organizations recommended size for quilts is: 60″ x 80″;the minimum size is: 55″ x 65″; and the maximum size: 72″ x 90″. Most of my quilts, if not all, fall into the maximum size. The Quilt (as each of my quilts do) consists of a top, filling or batting, and backing.
